I am using Dynamic Web Templates for 150+ pages on my site.  I used different tiled backgrounds for different pages.  I want my borders (as defined in my DWT) to pick up the tiled background from my editable content page.  Is this not possible?  I can't seem to make this happen so I have one background image for the whole page, but different ones on different pages.  I am using EW1.  Isn't there a way to do this?  I am migrating from FP2000, where I used the Shared Borders feature.  Thanks for any suggestions!< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">

It would be better to see your site got the link?

You should use a style sheet to set the background of your body (page) and for your borders... if its the same site you were using in fp and you are still using shared borders then its likely you have lots of styles and formatting all over the place, you are best cleaning up the dwt and the pages and using a css sheet.

We need to see what you are doing first for a fix.

Oh, sorry.  Here is an example of one page on my site that has a CSS sheet attached to the DWT and the body and DWT all use the same BG image:
http://www.sewterific.com/IndexHome.html

Here is a page that has no background because I cannot figure out how to use a tiled image for the whole page:
http://www.sewterific.com/embprojects.htm

What I did for the second page is to set up a DWT with no background at all.  If I use the same DWT as the first page, I end up with a background I don't want for the second page.

I'm sure I'm just missing something here.  Going from Shared Borders in FP2000 to DWTs and CSS with EW1 is turning out to be more of a challenge than I expected.  I am still quite the newbie with EW and CSS, but more than willing to learn.

Any suggestions?  Ideally, I would have one DWT but could change the page backgrounds at will.

On the first link you have it in the body of the dwt
body {
background-image: url('images/MG-tile.gif');

}

You need in your css sheet .. which is called main.css

the following

body {

background: url('../images/MG-tile.gif');

}

Put your background image in the images folder

weather its a dwt or a page you should have the background in the style sheet.

You are using expression web ... as you would old frontpage .. using
the formatting toolbar but of course you are generating styles all over
the place.. plus you are trying to work on a live site.

You should back up your site and have a working site where you implment changes
on a password protected space... so you can check results...

I would dump shared borders and using page includes within the dwt
if you require a menu that changes throughout the site.

You need to understand what you are doing with expression web before designing
a new template and making it into a dwt... its no use using a dwt
only to have the same shared border and bad coding as you have now.
It will just get you more confused and not moving in a new direction
which is I presume what you want. All thos graphics will also load
the page down...why not use text links (you are not doing your viewers any
favours by having a long load time plus those users that need a screen reader
will have a harder time following links plus it does not do your
seo (search engine optimisation any good either.

First setup ew

Free Setting up Expression Ebook   http://any-expression.com/expression-web/ebooks/setting-up-e xpression-web-ebook.htm

Read up about dwts

read up about page includes
You need a doctype in place ...

also look at pat geary's and mine free site templates ..
the left 2 col liquid one should suit your layout. Just
remove the top navigation so you can use a left hand menu. Which can
be made with css... there are plenty about. You should extend
http://frontpage-to-expression.com/site-templates/

if you email me I did a quick rework of the 2 col liquid site template that
matches your layout and you can have the files.. i dont have time
to upload them to a site for you to pick em up right now.

hope this helps
Tina

Hi Tina,
Thank  you for this info.  I will plug away at your suggestions.  I actually purchased your ebook in early December and have been trying to work my way through it.  Unfortunately, my site was recently hacked and I had to find the quickest way to move it to another server and dump FP at the same time, as my web host advised me that FP was likely very vulnerable to hackers because it is no longer supported by Microsoft.  Soooo, I had to do what I could in a short amount of time.  I do realize I have a lot of work to do to trim down and improve my site.  But I can't afford to take it down for the duration while I try to learn all this new stuff (like EW and CSS).  I knew that EW did not do the shared borders like FP, but I wasn't prepared to have to spend soooo much time reading up on this stuff and trying to learn how to do so many new things just to preserve my borders.

How do I email you?

Hi Teri

Just get my email from any-expression.com or use the contact form there... but its my name then the domain name:)

You don't have to work on the site thats live on the web..... no you leave that alone.

You work separately on a working web which you can publish to a password protected area of your site so that search engines won't pick up the duplicate site. You need to perfect a dwt design first.. well not even that perfect a template .... put the styles in the head.... so your just working on one page.... get lots of feedback.. then clean up your site and make the template a dwt and apply it. It sounds like you would have been better with a class but we have not done one in a while. Just how any pages does your site have? You have to think of a better method than your graphics for the extra menu merely that one page was slowing my system down and i had to wait... you are welcome to the quick fix files based on your design.... but I think you could do with a much better design.. your graphics are good and the design of the site is still going to reflect that it was made in frontpage it just has that look .. which is old hat... your graphics deserve a much better setting. Do you draw by hand on paper or by hand on the computer? ... I could not really get into your site because that homepage was so busy with graphics it overwhelmed me. I love the way you draw in that you strip things back to fewer lines... I'd like to take some of your designs and doodle them. My art site got hacked also and its a bit of a mess as I think I published an old one...I've not had time to get back to it ... but these are my doodles - http://clarke-abstract-art.com/
